Howdy, sports fans! Greetings from Los Angeles.

Everything is set for the Carbon Sabbath to start tomorrow. I’ll spend the morning at Thad’s (see www.thads.org or the Home Church page under my Bio tab above) and then set off for a gentle ride along the coast of Malibu to Leo Carrillo State Park. More on that soon.

Because the first official post won’t be up for a few days, I thought I’d take a minute to introduce you to my new friend. It’s a Surly Long Haul Trucker, and it has served me well thus far. These bikes are classics for anyone interested in touring.

Let’s take a moment and review the evolution of my particular companion (see descriptions below):

Here's what the bike looked like on the first day I picked it up from the local bike shop in New Haven.

This is the next phase in its development. Here, it has the leather grips and the front rack, but the rear rack had yet to arrive. During this phase, I trained by strapping my tent to the space behind the seat.
Here it is in all its glory! This is the bike that will carry me up, down, and around the country.

This trusty stead even has a name now. I’m going to hold off on revealing that little tidbit until the first official blog so as not to spoil the surprise for some tomorrow.

In the meantime, take a gander at a few shots from my training over the last weak in the greater Santa Barbara area:
